Maintaining a log home at the end of summer is crucial to ensure it remains in good condition for the following season. Since a log home is made entirely of wood, there can be some unique challenges in comparison to vinyl or metal sided homes. Here’s a simple checklist you can follow:

  1. Inspect Exterior Logs

Check for signs of weathering, cracking, or insect damage on the logs. Look for any areas that need caulking or chinking. This would include any checks that are upward facing, allowing easy water entry, and larger the ¼ inch wide.

  1. Clean Exterior

Wash the exterior logs to remove dirt, dust, and mildew. You can use a pressure washer on a low setting or a soft brush and mild detergent. We would recommend using a high quality, log specific, wash like that offered by Sashco.

  1. Inspect and Clean Gutters

Clear out any debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage and prevent water damage. Using a hose with a spray nozzle is very effective for this.

  1. Check Roof

Inspect the roof for damaged or missing shingles or pealed back flashing (as often found around the chimney). Address any issues as soon as possible to prevent leaks.

  1. Inspect Windows and Doors

Check for gaps or cracks around windows and doors. Replace weatherstripping if necessary to improve energy efficiency as well as preventing water leaks and insect entry.

  1. Inspect and Clean Chimney

If you have a fireplace or wood stove, inspect and clean the chimney to remove creosote buildup. You will want this to be done so you and the family are ready to enjoy chilly days gathered around the fire.

  1. Check Foundation and Drainage

Inspect the foundation for cracks and ensure proper grading around the home to prevent water from pooling near the structure.

  1. Inspect Deck and Porches

Check for any loose boards or railings on decks and porches. Be sure and secure any loose nails or screws. Clean and seal wood surfaces as needed.

  1. Inspect HVAC System

Change air filters and consider having your HVAC system serviced to ensure efficient operation. You can also consider having your duct work cleaned out.  This is helpful to keep allergens low and your air quality high.

  1. Inspect Interior Logs

Check interior logs for signs of moisture or insect damage. Monitor humidity levels and use a dehumidifier if necessary to prevent mold growth. Dehumidifiers are recommended in high humidity areas.

  1. Inspect Plumbing

Check for leaks under sinks and around toilets. Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing in colder months.

  1. Prepare for Winter

If applicable, prepare your log home for winter by storing outdoor furniture, disconnecting hoses, and taking other necessary winterization steps. You can check here for more details on winterizing your log home.
