As winter transitions into spring, March is the ideal time to inspect your log home for seasonal wear. Snow, ice, and temperature fluctuations can create hidden issues that are best addressed early.
Start with a full exterior walk-around. Look for new cracks (checking), gaps in chinking or caulking, soft spots, or signs of rot. Pay special attention to south and west-facing walls, which take the most weather exposure.
Check your roof and drainage system. Inspect shingles and flashing, clean out gutters, and ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Proper drainage is critical during snowmelt season.
Monitor moisture levels. Watch for mildew or dark staining on logs, and maintain indoor humidity between 35–55% to prevent excessive log movement.
Inspect for early pest activity. Look for carpenter bee holes, sawdust, ant trails, or small entry gaps around windows and doors.
A simple March inspection helps protect your investment and keeps your log home strong, beautiful, and ready for spring. The team at 888 Log Guys are here to help with any of your maintenance, repair or restoration needs.
